The Screwtape Letters. By, C.S Lewis
A Masterpiece of Satire on Hell’s Latest Novelties and Heaven’s Unanswerable Answer
C.S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters has entertained and enlightened readers the world over with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life and foibles from the unique vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to “Our Father Below.” At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C.S. Lewis gives us the correspondence of the wordly-wise devil to his nephew Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man.
“Indeed the safest road to Hell is the gradual one--the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts...Your affectionate uncle, Screwtape.”
-“It is funny how mortals always picture us as putting things into their minds: in reality our best work is done by keeping things out.”
-“Courage is not simply one of the virtues but the form of every virtue at the testing point, which means at the point of highest reality. ”
-“The more often he feels without acting, the less he will be able ever to act, and, in the long run, the less he will be able to feel.”
-“Do not be deceived, Wormwood. Our cause is never more in danger than when a human, no longer desiring, but still intending, to do our Enemy's will, looks round upon a universe from which every trace of Him seems to have vanished, and asks why he has been forsaken, and still obeys.”
-“For the Present is the point at which time touches eternity.”
“A moderated religion is as good for us as no religion at all—and more amusing.”
I believe that the best books are the ones that get your mind wired, and your wisdom sparking. This book really proved that. There are too many quotes to write. C.S Lewis: We all know him, yes? You've definitely heard his name. He is one of the greatest Christian authors. His books, fictional or not, are great for all minds to sharpen their faith and direct a path worthy of God. Starting off, I found it relieving and astonishing to find a book at the Enemy's views---the home in Hell and the Devil's little demons. This story is letters from a high-class demon (Screwtape) to his rookie nephew (Wormwood). We needed this. It is challenging, terrifying, encouraging, and eye-opening to see that perspective for once. But you have to remember not to feel sympathy, empathy, pity, joy, or faith towards the Enemy force(s)--- because that's all that's happening in our modern age---But C.S Lewis doesn't do that. If I laugh, I laugh at Screwtape. Lewis doesn't give the characters depth and praise of worth and emotion, he just shows their beliefs and how they tempt people.
I learned a lot from this book. Spiritually, emotionally, mentally--- even if I knew some of the facts/concepts, I still felt motivated and enthralled by this book. Even an unbeliever could read this. The motives of the Devil, how they tempt humans so sly and so ruthless and yet unseen is so important to see. It shows how even believers can be tempted and fall. They stumble! And it shows how what you think is worthy of God, can be twisted into something unstable, ready to crumble.
I feel any age ready for a deep dive can be ready enough for this., or if they can read more detailed grammar wrap their head around deep perspectives. 12? Sure! Some readers might not understand Lewis's grammar. It can be a little troublesome to understand, and I've read over what I just read a few times, but when you get the point it all becomes easier, and his grammar becomes a work of art, a beautiful display of hard work. I had to read this for school (homeschooling here), but now I want to read C.S Lewis more, just for the sake of wisdom and curiosity. I am all in for fictional stories oh yeah, but its good to empty pleasures of like; thriller, romance, horror, dystopian, and work on your spiritual mindset. So, you can always take a break and read these short and sweet C.S Lewis. It really helps.
Finally, I rate this 10/10, 13-Forever.
Romance: Mention of love and lusts. Violence: None. Language: Offending but no direct curse words. Brat.
