Legend--by: Marie Lu
What was once the western United States is now home to the Republic, a nation perpetually at war with its neighbors.
Born into an elite family in one of the Republic's wealthiest districts, fifteen-year-old June is a prodigy being groomed for success in the Republic's highest military circles.
Born into the slums, fifteen-year-old Day is the country's most wanted criminal. But his motives may not be as malicious as they seem.
From very different worlds, June and Day have no reason to cross paths - until the day June's brother, Metias, is murdered and Day becomes the prime suspect. Caught in the ultimate game of cat and mouse, Day is in a race for his family's survival, while June seeks to avenge Metias's death. But in a shocking turn of events, the two uncover the truth of what has really brought them together, and the sinister lengths their country will go to keep its secrets.
“Each day means a new twenty-four hours. Each day means everything's possible again. You live in the moment, you die in the moment, you take it all one day at a time."
-“Forever and ever, kid, until you're sick and tired of seeing me.”
-“You must be as thrilled as I am to meet again. Call it an act of extreme kindness that I requested your leg be bandaged up," she snaps. "I want to see you stand for your execution, and I won't have you dying from infection before I'm through with you."
"Thanks.You're very kind.”
"You walk in the light."
Well... cough cough. This book is themed of, I'll say, murder-mystery, and thriller. I enjoyed June's detective moments, and they were probably the only enjoyable parts, and that just might be an overstatement. This book has an anime feel, and I believe it can identify as one, also the graphic-novel (comic) is anime, so that checks out. So, yes, if you don't like anime this might not suite you. I think the plot, and concept, are very good, but the execution just wasn't there, and this book has A LOT of room for improvement.
Starting with: The romance. The romance is obviously between June and Day, and they had so much potential, but yet again, the execution just wasn't there. They knew each other for two days and Day thinks, "Dang, how could I be falling for her?" Yeah, I know a lot of story's have quick lovers but this felt too quick, and within the third day, they share a---ahem---passionate kiss. Then there's some drama between the two. Maybe that type of romance suites you, but not me.
Junes logical and Sherlock Holmes thinking is entertaining. The world-build is dystopian and pretty well done. Day's character had so much Han Solo-scoundral potential, and I enjoyed him at times, but the characters are 15, and seem to believe they are 18.
The overall story I'd say is decent, too much room for improvement if you ask me. These reviews are more so warnings, to tell you whats in it, and what you might see. You might enjoy this, me on the other hand, not exactly, and I don't openly recommend it.
WARNING: For all those straight and Christian people out there, and everyone, the sequels contain Gay, and probably more passionate romance content, I haven't read them but that's what I was told. YoU hAvE bEeN WArNeD.
So, in the end, I'd rate this a 5/10 and 13-Adults.
Romance: Passionate. Fast-paced. Violence: Barely over Mild. Gun-shots. Blood-showing plague.
Speach: Mild-Piss-Damn.
