The Captive Kingdom, By Jennifer A. Nielsen (4th book in the Ascendance Series0

"In a peaceful Carthya, Jaron leads as the Ascendant King with Imogen beside him--- but the peace he fought for so long for is not destined to last. On a routine sea voyage, Jaron's ship is brutally attacked, and he is taken hostage. The mysterious captors and their leader, Jane Strick, accuse Jaron of unthinkable acts. They are also in possession of some shocking items -- including the crown and sword that belonged to Jaron's older brother, Darius. The items unearth a path Jaron thought he put behind him. Though it seems impossible, Jaron must consider: Could Darius be alive? And what does Strick want with Jaron? Against his will, Jaron will be pulled back into a fight for the throne --- and a battle to save his kingdom."

"And if doing what's right makes someone angry with me, then may I cause rage and fury wherever I go,"

"By the time the cave was in view, I was sore and exhausted, and my temper was stirring. In other    words, I felt almost normal,"

"One may ask, how is the great King Jaron described by those who know him? The answer rarely includes the word "great" unless the word to follow is "fool," though I've also heard "disappointment," "frustration," and "chance that he'll get us all killed," . . . "

Okay, just because my review for this isn't as positive as I'd (or you) hoped, doesn't mean I don't like the series. This has me a bit conflicted --- ok, very conflicted. The characters were good and I love them, but just when we finally got a firm foundation in their relationships in the Shadow Throne, it gets toppled again, which we didn't exactly need, not that it's horrible, but kinda annoying. Everyone has something wrong with Jaron and gets annoyed that he's keeping secrets, or 'shutting them out'

Anna: Everyone
Jaron: Elsa
Lol. But, the humor? Great! Jaron still makes me happy with his jokes, but it gets predictable now that we know him from the past 3 books. And (for those who read it know what I mean) when they bring him, it confuses Conner's intentions in the False Prince, and as much as I'm glad he's there, he gets annoying and ya' know, strange, and a lot of me wishes he wasn't there. Tobias is annoying at parts, along with Imogen, and Fink is good. But the girl, Trea, appears as if Jaron never heard her mentioned, like --- I'm sure she would've been mentioned before now. Roden ---bruh, my sister and I were wiping off fake tears to each other during a visit with people. Now, I LOVE and I mean really love, every single character and they each are amazing --- but Roden in this makes me a bit upset. The plot was a good idea. I like this book, but not as much as I wished, and I wish I could love it as much as the others. It's great, amazing, funny, yet annoying, strange, and confusing. I, for the fourth time, finished it in a day this January of 2025, don't ask what time of day because that is embarrassing :|   (IYKYK)
I rate this a 5/10, and rate it 12-Adult.

(BTW thanks for being patient, lol, sorry I haven't posted life's been pish posh)

Happy reading!! :D
