The Runaway King, By Jennifer A. Nielsen, (2nd book in the Ascendance Series)
Just weeks after Jaron has taken the throne, an assassination attempt forces him into a deadly situation. Rumors of a coming war are winding their way between the castle walls, and Jaron feels the pressure quietly mounting within Carthya. Soon, it becomes clear that deserting the kingdom is his only hope of saving it. As his adventures lead him into dangerous new territory, Jaron must learn to tell his friends from his enemies and decide whome he can trust --- if he can trust anyone at all. But furthur Jaron is forced to run from his identity, the more he wonders if it is possible to go too far. Will he ever be able to return home again? Or will he have to sacrifice his own life in order to save his kingdom? The stunning second installment of The Ascendance Series takes readers on a roller~coaster ride of treason and murder, thrills and peril, as they journey with the Runaway King.
"Everyone gets scared sometimes. It's only the fools who won't admit it,"
-"Above all else, I think you are a complusive liar,"
My laughter was tense, but sincere, "Hardly. In fact, I consider myself a compulsive truth-teller. It's only that everyone else seems compelled to misunderstand me,"
-"Her eyes scanned the dark skys. "Did it rain? Why are you all wet?"
"A nighttime bath,"
"Fully dressed?"
"I'm modest,"
-"How does it feel?" Fink asked, "Like butterfly kisses, what do you think?"
"Any way we can bypass the cruelest method of death and settle this over a game of cards?"
The Runaway King was roller~coaster of fun in this sequel to the False Prince. Jarons sass and bravery is irratating but mainly PERFECT. It's a great sequal full of surprises, and whats best is Jaron goes in disguise as a pirate in a pirates camp! Many times in my head I said "Smooth Jaron." The romance mainly ignites in this book, and---hoh boy, it's both painful and beautiful, oui oui. So yes, congrats romance-lovers you finally got the romance to ignite, and it only gets crazier from there. It was very interesting to see Jaron navigate more lies with a few of his own. He always has those moments where someones like, "Oh you meant for that to happen!" And its entertaining. Still, kind of predictable, but not enough to ruin it. #KarenJaron
I recommend for 10-adults and rate it 9/10, yet again.
Romance: Mild. Violence: Mid. Near-drowning. Whipping. Broken bones. Sword wounds.
Speach: Low. Devils. Teasing.
