The False Prince, By Jennifer A. Nielsen (1st book in the Ascendance Series)
In a faraway land, civil war is brewing. To unify his kingdom's divided people, a noblemen named Conner devises a cunning plan to find an impersonator of the kings--lost son and install him on the throne. four orphans are forced to compete for the role, including a defiant and clever boy named Sage. Sage knows Conner's motives are more than questionable, yet his life balances on a swords point ---- he must be chosen to play the prince or he will certainly be killed. his rivals will be devising their own plots as well, so Sage must trust no one and keep his thoughts hidden. as Sage moves from a rundown orphanage to Conner's sumptuous palace, layer upon layer of deceit unfolds, until finally, a truth is revealed that may very well prove more dangerous than all of the lies taken together. Jennifer A. Nielsen has woven a heart-racing tale full of danger and bold adventure, lies and deadly truths that will keep readers in the edge of their seats
"If I had to do it all over again, I would not have chosen this life. Then again, I'm not sure I ever had a choice."
-"Hail His Majesty the scourge of my life," Conner said to Roden and Tobias as he stomped up the stairs.
"I fear the devils no longer, because I have the worst one right here in my home!"
-"Unfortunatly I understood exactly what she meant. Nobody should have to bow to a false prince,"
-"What do I care about sportsmanship? If I'm about to get killed it's not play anymore. I won't check the rules to see if my survival fits with someones code book of fair play,"
"Valuable lessons were coded pain no one apologized for,"
Wow this book has changed my life around! Starting with the character Sage: He might seem annoying at first, but trust me, he gets amazing. I low-key love Sage's amazing sass, his humor, and surprises, it really makes the book all the more enjoyable. Roden and Tobias, you can not hate not, my people! You have to trust the process, they get better throughout the series.
For all the romance lovers, I'm sorry. This one has hints and dashes of romance, but trust me when I say, they ignite in the books to come.
Everything gets 10 times better after the HUGE plot twist (Iykyk) and while this book can be quite predictable, it does have its surprising charm.
Full of twists and turn, secrets and truth, this book will keep you with anticapation! #KarenJaron
I recommend for ages 10-Adults, and rate it a 9/10!
